Advent Saint Collection: Saint Juan Diego, Mensajero de Mexico

The Messenger. Feast December 9th.
 This cute painting is a little celebration of Mexico with the colors and symbols: the papel “picado” image at top was going to initially be actual papel picado but alas, I tried, so now we have papel pintado (lol). In the papel image is an outline of an eagle, a nod to Juan Diego’s indigenous name “he who speaks like an eagle”. The walls are plastered with modeling paste meant to look like adobe walls. The bottom third is bright colored tiling with Juan and his Our Lady tilma over top, roses and more roses, and more pots of roses. I think it looks like a page of a Tomie DePaola book and it makes me happy.
